ABC News is poised to make a major round of cuts that will reduce the size of the news division by as much as 20% and radically reorder the network’s traditional approach to news gathering.
Forced to belt-tighten by the weak advertising market, network executives have opted to restructure the labor-heavy newsroom from top to bottom in favor of a leaner, more nimble operation, according to multiple sources. In a memo that went out to employees Tuesday afternoon, ABC News President David Westin said "The time has come to anticipate change, rather than respond to it," he wrote. "We have a rare opportunity to get in front of what’s coming, to ensure that ABC News has a sound journalistic and financial footing for many years to come, and to serve our audiences even better." Larry Mendte, the former CBS3 Philly anchor has landed himself an on-air job in the Big Apple as a TV commentator (watch above). Mendte - who has been off the air since his highly publicized firing from the station in June 2008 after an FBI investigation found he had hacked into former co-worker Alycia Lane's e-mail account - has been working on commentary pieces for WPIX-TV for the last month says WPIX news director Bill Carey. Mendte's commentary has also landed on Tribune's co-owned WGN-TV. Veteran Chicago TV critic Robert Feder isn't happy at all about it; "Friday was a good day for convicted felons at Tribune Co.: One turned up as a commentator on its television stations, and another landed a midday fill-in gig on its flagship radio station. Both acts showed the depths to which a once-great company has sunk under its current regime of cynicism and contempt for the audience. MORE
